What is hot glue?

Hot glue, is an adhesive that has moldable properties when heated, so it is also called hot melt adhesive(HMA). After heating it to the corresponding temperature, it will melt into a liquid state. And stopping the heating, it will rapidly cool and solidify within tens of seconds to one minute, and at the same time show strong viscosity.Hot glue plays a important role in the joining of many materials, including wood, plastic, ceramic, rubber and glass, so it can have high performance in woodworking, wood furniture panel processing, etc. In terms of components, most of the hot glue is made of thermoplastic resin as the main component, adding plasticizers, tackifying resins, antioxidants, flame retardants and fillers and other components by melting and mixing. The performance of traditional hot glue can degrade when exposed to humidity or extreme temperature changes, causing the hot glue to lose its adhesion.

In the application of woodworking in furniture industry, hot glue is usually divided into EVA hot glue and PUR hot glue.

What’s the difference of PUR hot glue and EVA hot glue?

1. The differences in the way of working:Although both EVA hot glue and PUR hot glue belong to hot melt glue, they are different in the way they work. They both enter a molten state after being heated to a certain extent, but PUR hot glue is different from EVA hot glue. The glue will continue to chemically react with the moisture in the air during the cooling process, making the bonding effect better.

 

2. The difference in effect: We will compare the effects of using these two different hot glues in the edge sealing of woodworking in Furniture industry:

 

At first, we can test both Hot glues in a high temperature and high humidity environment:

 

It is obvious that the edge band is peeled off by the board edged with EVA hot glue.

 

In stark contrast, the boards glued with PUR hot glue were intact.

 

Therefore, PUR hot glue is obviously better than EVA hot glue in effect.

 

Overall, hot glue is very suitable for use in woodworking in the furniture industry, it provides high adhesion and can effectively improve production efficiency.
